Senior Private Paweł Szwed, aged 27, was killed in action 20th August 2008, after the mobile patrol vehicle he was in struck a road mine (IED) 20km from Ghazni. Directly after the explosion, Taliban insurgents opened fire with rifles and machine-guns.
Private Szwed died from injuries he received in the blast. He served with the Mazowiecka Sapper Brigade in Kazun. In the same incident, two other Polish soldiers died and one was seriously wounded.
