Sergeant Patrick S. Tainish was born August 25, 1970 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of David Larry Tainish and the late Anthea Jean Knight Tainish. He was serving in Iraq as a member of “Eagle” Troup, 2d Squadron of the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment from Fort Polk, Louisiana. Sergeant Patrick Tainish was thirty-three years old when he was killed on February 11, 2004 by an improvised explosive device while on mounted patrol in Bagdad, Iraq. Patrick jointed the Army as a cavalry scout, in September of 2000. He had been at Fort Polk since May 2001.

During his military service, Patrick received the following awards, the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal.

Deborah Tainsh honored her stepson by writing to Heart of a Hawk, Eye of the Eagle to help make sense of her life. But after her stepson was killed, she wrote to try to make sense of his death. In the 200-page book, she describes how her stepson left behind his rebellious youth to embrace his military roots. And it tells of a marriage buckling with the strain of grieving for the death of a son in different ways. She considered the book a family’s journey. On January 26, 2007, Deborah Tainish, her husband Sergeant Major David Tainsh USMC (Ret) and twenty-four other Gold Star families met with President Bush at Fort Benning, Georgia to honor their lost service members.

Patrick’s life and personality will continue to be honored by the ongoing work being done by his stepmother Deborah as families continue to deal with the loss of their loved ones.
