SIERRA VISTA, AZ, USA U.S. Army SGT, HHT 1ST SQUADRON 14TH CAVALRY REGIMENT, FORT LEWIS, WA 98433 MOSUL, IRAQ 02/16/2004

Born Michael Matthew Merila on February 17, 1980. “Matt” from Sierra Vista, Ariz., was a good solid student. While in high school, he was a member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America. He also helped build a trophy case for the school. Friends and family remembered him as a jokester who would drive around in the rain with the top down on his 1987 convertible. He drew people to him

Those who worked with Sergeant Michael M. Merila believed he was poised for a bright future in the military. In the top 2 percent of his basic training class, he distinguished himself in his studies to become a paralegal.

Matt is survived by Merila’s mother, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, and his father, a retired Army chief warrant officer.

He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.
