MARYVILLE, TN, USA U.S. Marines SGT, A CO, 3D RECON BN, 3D MAR DIV, (I MEF FWD), OKINAWA, JAPAN TIKRIT, IRAQ 08/10/2008

Michael Harvey Ferschke Jr., of Maryville, Tennessee, and his mom talked a lot by phone and he was always giving advice or trying to help his friends and family. He was like a male ‘Dear Abby,’ Robin Ferschke said.

He always used to say his dad was his hero. He was born in Rhode Island, but grew up and went to high school in Maryville, about 16 miles south of Knoxville. He was an energetic and adventurous teenager who liked riding BMX bikes and skiing. He was an honors student in math and was involved in several drama performances.

Michael was a 2003 high school graduate and joined up right out of high school because he wanted to serve his country, said Douglas Cooper, a family friend. This is something he had dreamed of doing for a long, long time.

Ferschke completed diving school while in the Marines and hoped to become a diving instructor.

Michael H. Ferschke, 22, died on August 10, 2008, during combat operations in Salahuddin province, Iraq. He was assigned to Okinawa, Japan, with the Marine Active duty 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion..
