Poland Polish Army Warrant Officer 1st Class, Provincial Military Staff 5/8/2004, Karbala, Iraq

Two Polish soldiers died in Iraq on Saturday. Captain Slawomir Struzak died in hospital from serious wounds sustained in a landmine explosion near the Iraqi town of Al Imam. Earlier on Saturday Senior cadet Marek Krajewski died when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming civilian Iraqi lorry and rolled down an embankment. The deaths brought to four the number of Polish soldiers killed in Iraq since Poland took control of the south central zone of the country last year. Two of them were combat fatalities. The Saturday fatalities came a day after Poland’s leading war correspondent Waldemar Milewicz and his Polish Algerian colleague Mounir Bouamrane working for Polish public TV, were shot dead in a road attack south of Baghdad. A special mass was celebrated this morning in the Polish Camp Babylon in Iraq honouring the two Polish soldiers and the journalists killed in the past two days. The local chapel was crowded with the members of the Polish contingent.
