Sergeant Justin L. Eyerly of Salem, Oregon was a 1999 graduate of South Salem High School. He worked as an intern in Web design for the Portland Trail Blazers. He was studying graphic design at Portland State University, and hoped one day to work in the music industry or produce video games. Justin was an avid fan of the rock band Filter, creating and maintaining a long-running Web site about the group. In a statement on the band’s own Web site, Filter frontman Richard Patrick promised to dedicate their upcoming album to Eyerly’s memory “as a tribute to this courageous young man, whose passion for my music will not be forgotten.” Justin was a talented and creative man whose love of music was rivaled only by his sense of duty. Survivors include his parents, Lynn and Susan Eyerly. Justin was 23.

Justin was a member of the Army National Guard, 2dd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, at Cottage Grove, Oregon. On June 7, 2004 the Department of Defense announced today the death of five soldiers supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died June 4 in Baghdad, Iraq, when individuals using improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades attacked their convoy. Justin was one of the soldiers were killed.
