When Jonathan Ruben Flores, of San Antonio, Texas, was 17, he was insistent about joining the Marines. He couldn’t join without his parents’ permission until he turned 18, but he was so adamant, they signed. Flores was in the Junior ROTC program in high school, where retired Air Force Col. Dennis LeVan remembered him as polite, upbeat and focused on what he wanted to do with his life.

The day before he died, he called to tell his family that after his tour in Iraq was over, he would volunteer for another. Lance Cpl. Jonathan R. Flores, 18, of San Antonio, was killed in action June 15, 2005, when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the Marines Active duty 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
