PARKSTON, SD, USA U.S. Army SSG, TROOP K, 3D SQUADRON, 3D ACR, (TF BAGHDAD) FORT CARSON, CO BAGHDAD, IRAQ 07/24/2005

Governor Mike Rounds today is asking that all flags in the state be flown at half staff on Thursday, August 4, 2005, from 8 a.m. until sunset in honor of Army Staff Sergeant Jason Wayne Montefering of Parkston, South Dakota who died while serving in Iraq.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Staff Sergeant Montefering during this most difficult time, said Governor Rounds. Staff Sergeant Montefering has made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation during this war on terrorism. It is with respect that we honor him in this manner.

Staff Sergeant Montefering, 27, was a member of K Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment from Ft. Carson, Colorado. He died July 24, 2005, while on his second tour in Iraq.He was described as a quiet soldier who became a steady leader.

“He sought to gain the acceptance of his fellow soldiers, not the attention of leaders,” his commander, Lieutenant Colonel Solomon said.

Sergeant First Class David Deam said Montefering — “Sgt. Monte” — was “always looking out for the best interests of those around him.”

It was Montefering’s second tour; he had just been promoted to squad leader. He is survived by his parents, Lorraine and Allen.
