Jason Lee Schmalz U.S. Air Force Active Duty, 29, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Somerset, died Nov. 11, 2006, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson.

Born April 20, 1977, in Johnstown, son of Donald L. “Don Rodgers” Schmalz and Marsha Ann (Bittner) Schmalz-Herman. Preceded in death by father; maternal grandmother, Ella Bittner; paternal grandmother, Martha Schmalz; and stepgrandfather, Stephen Herman.

Survived by wife of eight years, the former Nicole Kruise; mother; half brother, Brandon Herman; and stepfather, Christopher Herman, all of Somerset; maternal grandfather, Earl K. Bittner of Somerset; paternal grandfather, Charles F. Schmalz of Houston, Pa.; and stepgrandmother, Mary Herman of Johnstown.

He was a 1st Lt. for the U.S. Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, where he was a navigator on an HC-130 and was in the 79th Rescue Squadrant. He was a 1995 graduate of University High School, Irvine, Calif., and a 1999 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the ICACIA Fraternity. He also was in the Civil Air Patrol and was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ
