The man that knew no strangers and had no enemies will always be remembered for his big, warm smile and generous, inviting spirit.

Army Sergeant James A. Sherrill, 27, of Ekron, Ky.; assigned to the 2113th Transportation Company, Kentucky Army National Guard, Paducah, Ky.; was killed April 3, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle in Bayji, Iraq.

This Kentucky Guardsman is remembered by soldier and school-mate alike as the type of person that when you met him he left a lasting impression with you. He was a Godly man who aspired to become a police officer and minister.

Sherrill joined the Kentucky Guard after serving four years as a Marine. “He was always a leader who put God and his family first.”

Sherrill is survived by his fiancée, Stephanie Blevins, their daughter, Chloe, his mother, Beatrice and father William “Buddy” Sherrill.

A good friend and outstanding football player, James was admired as a hero and someone their children could model. Proud to serve and ready to act, James provided the kind of example of which memories are made.

One of his friends remembered their last conversation in which James said, ‘I’ll be all right, I have God with me.’ Little did they know how accurate that statement truly was.

“To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord” – James is in perfect company.
