The folks standing along the streets of Canton didn’t necessarily know Marine Corporal Jacob Turbett and yet people stood holding American flags on Ford Road in a driving snowstorm paying their respects to the 2007 Canton High School graduate killed in Afghanistan.

“It’s about patriotism,” explained said Lucy Smithers. “He gave his life for our country. This was the least I could do for him.” Bad weather was not a deterrent.

Hundreds of citizens lined the roadways along Canton Center and Ford Road. The crowd consisted of veterans, friends and family. Jordan Stambaugh, a friend remembered Jake as an amazing guy and a great, great friend.” I wanted to show my respect.”

The show of support – the scores of people lining the streets, was overwhelming to Turbett’s family, many of whom have served their country, including his sister, Jamie, who is in the Navy.

Sheila Turbett, Jacob’s mother added: “Jake would have liked knowing there was that much support for the military. He’d have been out there with them if it had been someone else.”
