KENNER, LA, USA U.S. Army SFC, COMPANY A, 2D BATTALION, 30TH INFANTRY, 4 BCT, FORT POLK, LA BAGHDAD, IRAQ 06/08/2008

To Benny Campbell, David R. Hurst was hilarious, witty and an expert on every task he needed help with. He never sugarcoated anything with me and never steered me wrong. For that I respect and admire him and still to this day strive to be the kind of drill sergeant and NCO he was, wrote Campbell.

Hurst, 31, of Fort Sill, Okla., was killed June 7 in Baghdad when his vehicle struck an explosive. He was a 1994 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Polk. He was on his second stint in the Army. After first enlisting in March 1995, Hurst was honorably discharged in June 1998. He returned to active duty in August 1999.

David was such a wonderful person and the best friend anyone could ever ask for. He was loving, caring and dedicated to everything he did and everyone he knew. I was lucky enough to have him in my life and I am a better person for knowing him, wrote Sherri Pierce in tribute.

I never met a person that didn’t think the world of him and wish I could be half the person he was. He touched my heart and I will keep him there forever.

He is survived by his father, M. Wayne Hurst.
