AL ANBAR PROVINCE, IRAQ 04/08/2004

Marine Lance Corporal (Cpl.) Christopher B. Wasser, 21, of Ottawa, Kansas, died April 8, 2004, from wounds suffered in an attack in Husaybah, Al-Anbar Province, Iraq. He was stationed at Twenty Nine Palms, California.

Chris was born January 14, 1983 in Overland Park, Kansas, to Scott A. Wasser and Candy (Hoch) Wasser. His siblings include a brother, Nicholas, and sisters, Katie and Emily. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cub Scout Troop 3079 and Boy Scout Troop 77, all of Ottawa.

Chris attended Ottawa High School, where he was an active participant in marching, concert, and jazz bands. Upon graduation in 2001, he joined the Marines, in part to help pay for college. It was the only military branch for him, his mother said. “If he was going into the military, he wanted to go all the way, and that meant the Marines,” Candy Wasser said.

Chris began basic training on September 11, 2001, the day terrorists hijacked four planes on the U.S. East Coast. He was stationed at Twenty Nine Palms, CA in March of 2002 and deployed to Kuwait in January of 2003, as one of the first waves going into Iraq the following March. He spent most of his time in Kabala, Iraq, serving as an infantryman with the Third Battalion Regimental Combat Team 7. He was stationed stateside September of 2003 and redeployed to Iraq in February of 2004. Following funeral services at the Ottawa University Chapel, Chris was buried in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.
