PFC, HHC 1ST BATTALION 87TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, FORT DRUM, NEW YORK 13602

SHKIN, AFGHANISTAN 08/31/2003

Private First Class Adam Thomas is the son of Jeff and Cindy Thomas of Purdin, MO, and Ellen Thomas of Hannibal, MO. He is the grandson of Jerry and Peggy Thomas of La Plata, MO.

Army Private 1st Class Thomas was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.

Thomas was on patrol when his unit engaged Taliban guerillas near the Pakistan border. He was one of six snipers who came under fire during the early hours of “Operation Mountain Viper.”

He died of injuries sustained during the fight that lasted more than an hour. Adam attended high school in La Plata, Missouri while living with his grandparents. Because serving in the military was a family tradition, no one was surprised when he decided to join the Army in August 2001.

Adam last talked to his mother and sister by phone on the Wednesday before he was killed. He told them they were about to eat a good meal, were watching movies and not doing much.

Private First Class Adam Lee Thomas, proud son of Jeff Thomas and Ellen (nee DeGolyer) Thomas, loving brother of Jeffrey, Dawn and Courtney, and Michael, fond stepson of Cindy and stepbrother of Amanda and Nick, fond grandson of Dolores (the late Marshall Lee) DeGolyer and Jerry (Peggy) Thomas, caring nephew, cousin and friend to many.
